Cover-up, a new chance

In a cover-up tattoo, new pigments are applied into the same layer of skin as your old tattoo. When freshly applied, the pigment density in this layer is higher and sits on top of the old ink. Over time, however, the pigments inevitably settle deeper into the skin and the colors may fade. This time-consuming process can sometimes allow your old tattoo to reappear. Therefore, it’s important to consider the timing and the changing appearance of your tattoo’s colors. It is advisable to cover with darker colors or, if necessary, remove it completely.

If a tattoo is scarred, it can make performing a cover-up tattoo more challenging, but in many cases it is still possible. Here are some considerations

1. Scarred tissue can affect ink absorption: Scarred tissue can be uneven and may impact how well the new tattoo holds color. An experienced tattoo artist will carefully assess the scarred area and may use special techniques to ensure even color coverage.
2. Risk of color fading or blurring: In some cases, scarred tissue may have difficulty holding ink properly, which can cause colors to fade or blur. A skilled tattoo artist will take this into account and may apply techniques to minimize the risk of fading or blurring.
3. Risk of uneven surfaces: Scarred tissue can create uneven surfaces, making it harder to apply the cover-up tattoo evenly. In some cases, pre-treating the skin with specific methods can help smooth the surface and allow for a more consistent result.
4. Risk of additional scarring: Performing a cover-up on scarred tissue carries the risk of creating further scars, especially if the skin is sensitive to tattooing. An experienced tattoo artist will take precautions to minimize the risk of complications.

Before deciding on a cover-up tattoo, it is important to consult an experienced tattoo artist who has worked with scarred skin. They can assess your individual situation and provide recommendations on whether a cover-up tattoo is possible and advisable.

If you still love your old tattoo but it was poorly executed or the colors have already faded due to aging, you can simply have it refreshed. The basic design will be preserved (or what it was intended to be), re-tattooed, and new details can be added.

The classic version of a cover-up involves completely covering the old tattoo with a brand-new design. This offers more possibilities, as the old tattoo is effectively concealed.

And depending on the tattoo to be covered, light and airy alternatives can be found. At Amulett Tattoo, the philosophy is to cover as little as possible to make the old tattoo disappear, without falling into the heaviness and bulkiness of traditional cover-ups. I always strive to find a gentle solution, though this is not always possible.

The last resort is laser tattoo removal. Please note, however, that even with lasers, not all traces of your tattoo can be completely removed. Multiple sessions are often required to remove a tattoo, so it can take a long time—sometimes even months—before you see results on your skin. If you want to get a new tattoo in the same area after treatment, you must wait for full healing.
